Sephardi Sundays

Picture

Join Ahavath Achim for the first edition of our new SEPHARDI SUNDAYS series for a panel discussion, fresh Sephardic food, and live music!

For over 115 years, Portland has been home to a small and thriving community of Sephardic Jews who came to the Northwest from Turkey and the Island of Rhodes. Since our founding, our congregation has welcomed congregants of Israeli, Ethiopian, Moroccan, Yemeni, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Afghan, Egyptian, Portuguese, Spanish & Ashkenazi heritage.

Sephardi Sundays is a new program celebrating our living Sephardic history, right here in Portland! Every other month, we’ll have a discussion with living members of a Sephardic diaspora group to learn more about their experiences, and share a home-cooked meal prepared by our kitchen committee featuring recipes shared by the featured guests. The meal will be accompanied by live music of the guest’s diasporic country of origin, and we will also occasionally engage in a craft or other cultural activity from that tradition.

Schedule

Sunday, March 15 at our synagogue
11:00a - 2:00p

Panel Topic:
The Rhodesli Jewish Experience in Portland

With Renee Ferrera and Albert J. Menashe
Moderated by Lisa Varon

The panel will be followed by a traditional Rhodesli “desayuno” dairy brunch prepared by Patrick Varon and Renee Ferrera, and live Oud music with Eric Stern.

Get to know the Sephardic community right here in Portland, and share in celebration of our Sephardic and Mizrahi cultural treasures to expand your palette, enhance your Jewish knowledge, and highlight our diversity as a people to combat antisemitism.
